Phillip Eugene “John” Haney, Sr, 85, of Vermont, passed away at 1:40 AM, Thursday, December 1, 2016, at St. John’s Hospice in Springfield.
He was born on November 6, 1931, in Schuyler County, Illinois, the son of Willis and Grace (Schroeder) Haney. He first married Ruby Irene Hilton on August 25, 1951, in Missouri. She preceded him in death on August 23, 1985. He later married Barbara Kennedy Williams on November 6, 1993, at the Vermont United Methodist Church. She survives.
Also surviving are one son Steve Haney and wife Tess of Vermont, one daughter Sharon Stracker and husband Randall of Table Grove, one step son Alan Williams of Rushville, two step daughters Roxanne Morey and husband Scott of Springfield and Susanne Hendricks and husband Ed of Mt. Sterling, one daughter-in-law Donna Haney of Rushville, son-in-law Dave Thomas of Vermont, 10 grandchildren Steve Haney, Ben Haney, Jennifer Bollinger, Adam Haney, Danny Thomas, Chris Haney, Sara Schmalshof, Cara Stracker, Scott Haney and Mandy Haney, 6 step grandchildren Andrew Goldsby, Chris Williams, Jordan Williams, Ryan Williams, Sara Hendricks and Jeremiah Hendricks, 21 great grandchildren, and four step great grandchildren, one brother Gerald “Jake” Haney of Macomb, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son Phillip Eugene “Joe” Haney, Jr., one daughter Cheryl Ann Thomas, two brothers Charles and Perry Haney, and one sister Margie Smith.
A US Army veteran, he served from 1952 to 1954 and was stationed in Germany. He was a long time farmer, who loved to raise hogs. He worked as a moldman, and foreman of the maintenance department at Clayton Mark Foundry in Vermont, retiring in 1993.
He was a member of the Vermont United Methodist Church, the Vermont American Legion Post, and the Schuyler County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed gardening.Services will be at 2:00 PM, Monday, December 5, 2016, at the Wood Funeral Home in Rushville, with Reverend Robert Greene officiating. Interment will follow in the Vermont Cemetery, with military rites by Vermont American Legion Post. Visitation will be from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM Sunday at the Wood Funeral Home in Rushville. Memorials are suggested to the Vermont American Legion Scholarship Fund.
