Mary M. Hesse, 88, of Quincy, passed away at 12:40 a.m. Friday (Jan. 31, 2014) in the North Adams Home in Mendon.

Mrs. Hesse was born Oct. 6, 1925, in rural Mendon, to the late James H. and Myrtle (Dittmer) Tieken. She married Paul E. Hesse on June 16, 1945, in Fort Riley, Kan. Paul survives in Quincy.

Mrs. Hesse attended Mount Hebron Grade School, north of Mendon, and Mendon Township High School, where she met Paul. She received her nurse training at Blessing Nursing School. During her career as a registered nurse, she worked for Dr. Ash of Mendon for five years, Blessing Hospital in Quincy for 21 years, and the American Red Cross for 35 years.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Quincy, Blessing Alumni Association and the Bear Creek American Legion Auxiliary.

Surviving are two children, James (Peggy) Hesse of Mendon and Susan (Larry) Culp of Decatur; six grandchildren, Jennifer (Byron) Sparrow of Stronghurst, Curtis Hesse of Ursa, Diane Hesse of Ursa, Benjamin (Amanda) Hesse of Coatsburg, Justin (Sasha) Culp of Decatur and Tully (Melinda) Culp of Indianapolis; nine great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Jacob and Mitchell Sparrow, Kelsea Hammer, Jersey Hesse, Maxwell and Amberlyn Culp, and Dallas and Madison Garcia; one brother, James R. Tieken of Peoria; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Elizabeth Linneberger, Doris Landis and Wilma Scott; and one brother, Lloyd Tieken.

SERVICES: Funeral services will be private.

VISITATION: 5-7 p.m. Tuesday in the Hunter Funeral Home in Mendon.

MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions have been suggested to Christ Lutheran Church in Quincy, Adams County Chapter of the American Red Cross or the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
