GOLDEN, Ill. -- Francis E. Albers, 92, of Golden, died on Saturday (May 26, 2012) in Blessing Hospital in Quincy.

Francis was born on Dec. 24, 1919, in Golden, to the late Eilert W. and Wilhelmine Goldenstein Albers. He married Virginia Buss on Feb. 9, 1949, in Trinity Lutheran Church in Golden. Virginia survives of Golden.

He graduated from LaPrairie High School in 1938. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1944 until 1946. He served in Europe as a replacement soldier after the Battle of the Bulge. After the war in Europe was over, he was sent to Nuremburg, Germany, and served as a prison guard for the Nuremburg Trials. He was part of the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., in April 2010.

Francis farmed his entire life north of Golden. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Golden where he taught Sunday school and was on the church council. He was also a member of the Men's Brotherhood, Golden American Legion Post No. 802, Golden Historical Society, 40 et 8 club and was a board member of Immanuel Cemetery and Golden Good Shepherd Home. He loved to collect license plates.

In addition to Virginia, Francis is survived by four children, Bea Albers of Golden, Randall Albers and his wife, Dorothy, of Golden, Wendell Albers and his wife, Penni, of Fruit Cove, Fla., and Kay Bunge and her husband, Tom, of Perry, Mo.; four grandchildren, Samuel, Jenna and Aubrey Bunge and Anna Albers; three brothers, Paul Albers of Australia, Ernest Albers and his wife, Arlene, of Grandview, Iowa, and Raymond Albers and his wife, Jeanette, of Golden; two sisters, Mildred Croxton and her husband, Jude, of La Prairie, and Rosalie DeNiro and her husband, Tony, of Munroe Falls, Ohio; two sisters-in-law, Geneva Reuschel and Lois Croxton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Kyle Bunge; two brothers, Albert Albers and Walter Albers; and two sisters-in-law, Irma Albers, and Erna Albers.

SERVICES: 10 a.m. Thursday in Immanuel Lutheran Church in Golden, with the Rev. Linda Murray officiating. Interment will be in Immanuel Cemetery in Golden with military honors by the Golden American Legion Post No. 802.

VISITATION: 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Hunter Funeral Home in Golden.

MEMORIALS: Immanuel Lutheran Church or the Golden Good Shepherd Home.
