GOLDEN, Ill. -- Esther Elizabeth Janssen, 95, of Quincy, formerly of Golden, died at 3:12 a.m. Friday (July 15, 2011) in the Good Samaritan Home, Quincy.

She was born Jan. 2, 1916, in Golden, a daughter of Professor John F. and Louise C. Baumgartner Hunziker. She married Eldron William "Pete" Janssen Feb. 9, 1936, in Tabor Lutheran Church in Chicago by the Rev. J.R. Frenzel. He died Jan. 31, 2000.

Esther was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday achool for almost 20 years and she composed a hymn and lyric entitled, "He Loves Me Anyway."

As a volunteer worker, she gave about 10 years, including to the Red Cross and Blessing Hospital Tea Room. She was a member of Golden Good Shepherd Home Auxiliary, was a Gray Lady for the home, a former member of the choir, the Ladies Guild of Trinity, and was a charter member of the Chatton Home Bureau. She also did tutoring at Central Elementary School. Painting pictures, playing cards and crocheting afghans were among her hobbies. She made more than 40 afghans.

SERVICES: 10 a.m. Monday in Trinity Lutheran Church, Golden, with Pastor Jim Trutwin conducting. Interment will be in Golden Memorial Gardens.

To mourn, she leaves her son, Gene Janssen and wife, Ruth Ann, of Golden; her daughter, Lois Hamilton, of Quincy; daughter-in-law, Lavon Norris of LaPrairie; six grandchildren, April Yates and husband, Rick, Dawn Miller and husband, Dennis, Douglas Janssen and wife, Karen, Gregory Janssen, Laura Hessling and Matthew Hamilton and wife, Kathy; 18 great-grandchildren, Kari, Alexis, Kayley, Drew, Jacqueline, Olivia, Jayley, Amanda, Andrea, Kory, Mikayla, Janelle, Lynnea, Sharadyn, Tanner, Jacob, Taylor and Bailey; two brothers, Donald Hunziker of Connecticut and Floyd Hunziker of Michigan; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a son; Ronald Janssen; a brother, Roland Hunziker; and four sisters, Margaret Lifto, Ruth Johnson, Mildred O'Donnell and Rosemary Almquist.

VISITATION: 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Hunter Funeral Home, Golden.

MEMORIALS: Trinity Lutheran Church, American Red Cross or the Blessing Foundation for Hospice.
