Carlene Stevens

Carlene Stevens, 77, of La Prairie, passed away at 2:24 PM, Monday, September 13, 2021, in Blessing Hospital in Quincy.

She was born on January 29, 1944, in La Prairie, the daughter of John and Julia (Barrier) Schoonover. She married George Riley Stevens on July 4, 1962, in Quincy and he preceded her in death on February 12, 2008.

Surviving are two children George Edward “Ed” (Frances) Stevens of LaPrairie, and Julie H. (Joe) Pagett of Hannibal, nine grandchildren Holly A. (John) Sedore, Jesse L. (Kelly) Deming, Justin (Lindsy) Deming, Lisa M. (Jeremy) Whiteside, Lara L. Deming, Richard Jones, Joyce Pagett, Cassie Jo Pagett, and Amber Pagett, siblings Mary Goldenstein of Golden, Sidney Schoonover of Colchester, and Darlene Dunn of Lewiston and several nieces and nephew.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one grandson George Rolland Stevens, and brother Gibson Schoonover.

Carlene and George enjoyed traveling in their semi and saw a great deal of the country. She had a great talent for mechanics.  She opened LaPrairie Garage with her son Ed and operated it for over 30 years.  She worked two jobs for many years also working at Methode in Golden in the evenings.

She was a member of the La Prairie Community Church.  She was a fantastic cook and made the best fried chicken and minute steak.  She loved music especially classic country with a steel guitar.  She also enjoyed gardening and enjoyed the visiting birds especially hummingbirds, reading, puzzles and watching golf on tv.  More than anything she loved her family dearly.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 AM, Friday, September 17, 2021, at Knoxville City Cemetery in Knoxville, Illinois, with Pastor Tom Spain officiating.  Interment will follow.  Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Thursday at the Hunter Funeral Home in Golden.  Memorials are suggested to the La Prairie Community Church.
