GOLDEN, Ill. -- Carlene Grace Alhorn, 89, of Golden, formerly of the Jacksonville and Meredosia area, passed away at 2:55 a.m. Tuesday (June 8, 2010) in the Golden Good Shepherd Home in Golden. Carlene was born on July 6, 1920, in Clayton Township to the late Henry and Pauline Weerts Cassens. She married Wilbur Alhorn on Nov. 27, 1955, in Trinity Lutheran Church in Golden. Wilbur passed away on July 31, 2004. She attended local country schools and graduated from LaPrairie High School. Carlene lived near Meredosia during Wilbur's farming years before moving to Jacksonville in 1995. After Wilbur's illness they moved to Golden, where they made their home. She was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Golden. She taught Sunday school for many years in Meredosia, was a member of the church choir, and was a member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary Society, where she held several offices. She also attended weekly Bible study groups. Carlene enjoyed gardening and she canned and froze the vegetables and fruits that they raised. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and sewing. She had also been a 4-H leader in her younger years. Carlene is survived by one sister, Marjorie Hyer of Mendon, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Don and Laverne (Alhorn) Mealiff of Mendon; a sister-in-law, Virginia Alhorn of Redland, Calif., and a sister-in-law, Deloris Alhorn of Albuquerque, N.M. She was preceded in death by one brother, Wilmer Cassens; brother-in-laws, Jack Hyer, Melvin, Glenn, and Leland Alhorn, and sisters-in-law, Velma Blimling and Norita Cassens. SERVICES: 1 p.m. Friday in Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Golden, with Pastor Mike Grieve officiating. Interment will be in Golden Memorial Gardens in Golden. VISITATION: Visitation will be Friday from noon to 1 p.m. in Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Golden. MEMORIALS: Holy Cross Lutheran Church or Golden Good Shepherd Home.
