Betty Young

Betty Jane Young, 89, of Rushville, passed away at 10:35 PM, Thursday, July 14, 2016, at Heritage Health, Therapy and Senior Care in Mt. Sterling.

She was born on October 30, 1926, in Rushville, the daughter of the late Isaac and Sarah (Abbott) Young.

A lifelong school teacher, Betty began her career in a Fulton County one-room country school upon graduating from Rushville High School.  She then entered Greenville College graduating with honors.  She became a 5th grade teacher in the Decatur area for several years.  She then became a reading specialist retiring after 35 years in education.  Upon her retirement she returned to her home community of Rushville.  Music was a very important part of her life, having sung in various groups in college and directing many musical activities as a teacher.  One of her greatest joys was playing the piano and organ in her church.  She was very involved in her community and was instrumental in the development of Charles Place housing for seniors.

Surviving are many cousins.  She was preceded in death by one brother and one nephew.

Services will be at 11:00, AM, Monday, July 18, 2016, at the Rushville Free Methodist Church, with Pastor Greg Fish officiating.  Interment will follow in the Rushville City Cemetery.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.  Memorials are suggested to Rushville Free Methodist Church or First United Methodist Church Snacks for Students Program.
